2016 Highlights

2016-orphan-collage2016 provided Heart for Orphans First, and me personally, an awesome opportunity to serve and support Neema Village, a children’s home in Arusha, Tanzania. It’s very difficult to put in words the experience of volunteering here; holding and caring for the babies; playing and reading with the toddlers; and seeing the amazing love and work being done here.

Neema means “Grace” in Swahili and the mission of this ministry is to save abandoned, orphaned and at risk babies in Africa. Since its inception in 2012, God’s grace has been given to more than 100 babies who have been helped by Neema Village; many abandoned babies have now been adopted and others who had lost their mothers during the birth were saved and have now been able to return home to an extended family member.

2016-orphan-trioThanks to the contributions from many of you, Heart for Orphans First donated $5,000 to Neema Village. Funds were used to purchase playground equipment for the babies and crawlers, as well as buy more needed beds. God’s hands were all over this…..we were able to purchase the playground equipment from a local non-profit group in the same city who actually employs ORPHANS who are being aged out of area orphanages and then trains them to build the equipment! Full circle…..orphans helping orphans. I don’t know how it could get much better than that! We also purchased children’s Bibles for the toddlers as a Christmas gift from Heart for Orphans First.

2016-orphan-thank-youAccording to David Platt:
“Orphans are easier to ignore before you know their names. They are easier to ignore before you see their faces. It is easier to pretend they’re not real before you hold them in your arms. But once you do, everything changes.”

2017 Plans

It is our privilege to defend the fatherless, reaching out to these orphans around the world with the same compassion that God has shown to us. The Heart for Orphans First Board of Directors will be evaluating opportunities to support other orphanages in need of our financial aid. It’s your donations that allow us to continue this work. Please prayerfully consider a one-time gift or a monthly donation. No matter what your budget, you can make a difference!

2015 Highlights

Because of your faithful support, Heart for Orphans First has been blessed to be able to continue to partner with Lifesong for Orphans, responding to the needs of some of the thousands of children orphaned by the Ebola virus in Liberia.

In January, we provided an additional $5,000 to assist with living arrangements, food, transportation, medical care, education and employment of caregivers for these precious children.

In December, we donated another $1,000, which was matched by an anonymous donor, so our total contribution was $2,000.

In addition, we donated $1,000 (also matched by an anonymous donor) to Lifesong Farms-Zambia.

Lifesong Zambia:

  • Provides quality Christian education for orphaned and vulnerable children
  • Feeds students two meals each day
  • Supports parents and caregivers through business loans
  • Creates sustainable business through strawberry and produce farm
  • Disciples future leaders of Zambia through Biblical truth and educational excellence

Lifesong Farms-Zambia, with the support of Plant Sciences, Inc., has begun growing strawberries and selling them to local grocers. The fruit harvesting provides the gift of a job and self-worth to an orphan’s caregiver, which enables more orphans to receive care as well as to provide future employment for these children as they transition into adult living.

Liberia Update: New Year…New Beginnings

February, 2015

liberia childrenNEW HOPE CHILDREN’S HOME – Thanks to the many generous donations, including $15,000 from Heart for Orphans First, Lifesong Liberia has rented a four room house for a year, which is now home to ten children who have lost their parents to the Ebola virus. These ten children range in age from two to fourteen, and several of them are siblings. They will be cared for by three Ebola survivors.

It goes without saying that the children have all been traumatized by the loss of their parents, and for some of them, several other family members. Adding to their loss and confusion is the social stigma that is attached to anyone connected to the virus. All of the children appear to be in reasonably good physical health, and will be attending school as soon as all the arrangements can be made. Community social workers will be working with them on a regular basis, and they will also be closely monitored for any health issues. The Lifesong Director, Ramona Jones, described all the children as “looking a little lost”. She said that they are happy to be in this home, but of course, there will be many adjustments ahead.

Specific prayer requests for these precious children are that they will feel loved and accepted by their caregivers as well as the other children, for all the adults who interact with them to have
great patience and wisdom, and for God to heal their hearts.

Lifesong for Orphans

December, 2014

Lifesong ChildrenMore than 4000 children in West Africa have already been orphaned by the Ebola virus. As the deadly disease continues to take more lives, the number of orphaned children is expected to more than double. The loss of a Mother or Dad or both is traumatic enough; yet for these children, the tragedy is compounded by social isolation. At a time when they so desperately need comfort, compassion and care, many are being shunned and ostracized for fear of contamination, left to scavenge for food and shelter on their own.

Lifesong Building

To respond to the emergent need of these children, Heart for Orphans First is partnering with Lifesong for Orphans. In Liberia, one of the most impacted areas, Lifesong has two orphanages, both of which are at full capacity. The immediate plan, if funding can be found, is to rent a home to house about 10 children, with a focus on the younger children for whom other options have been exhausted. They estimate about $15,000 to cover rent for a compound, employ caregivers who are Ebola survivors, and assume the responsibility for food, transportation, medical care, and education for up to one year for these kids. During this time, the plan is to expand the existing orphanage facilities and then integrate the children into one of those homes, if other care from extended family cannot be found.

In December, I am proud to share that Heart for Orphans First provided $10,000 to Lifesong, plus $500 to provide a special Christmas dinner and some treats and stocking stuffers for the children at the two orphanages.

We are continuing to raise money for the smallest Ebola victims. Please help! Make your donation today.

A Thank You Note From Lifesong
Charlene-
Thank you SO much! We appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts! I am happy to tell you that just this week we received money from another organization, and we are pretty close to our fundraising goal for the additional 10 children.
And, the kids at the homes will really enjoy their special dinner and other goodies at Christmas! What a blessing you are to us all! It is so wonderful to have others come alongside us.
We are happy to remind you that 100% of your donation will go directly to these efforts.
God bless you richly for your generous heart for the children!

Arms of Love, International

February, 2014

ArmsOfLoveWater3 Because of the love and generosity of so many of you, we were able to send another $2,100 to Arms of Love Children’s Home in the Philippines! This paid for 3 months of fuel to run their generator so the children will have clean drinking water. They are still struggling with the devastation from November’s typhoon, and your donations made this possible!

Arms of Love, International

December, 2013

ChristmasBackpackNearly two million children were affected by Typhoon Haiyan that hit the Philippines in early November, 2013. Many were orphaned by the storm, and others already in orphanages are now without shelter, food or water because their orphanages were destroyed by the typhoon. Disease and inadequate medical supplies are also of serious concern.

ChristmasBasketballDestruction of homes and schools during disasters, and the resulting mass displacement of communities and families, are known to leave children at risk of abuse and exploitation.

In December, Heart for Orphans First provided $700.00 to Arms of Love Children’s Home to supply fuel for one month to run their generator to provide clean water. We were also able to send $500 to buy Christmas gifts for the children.

Your donations helped to put the smiles on these little faces…..priceless!!

Dear Charlene and our friends from Heart for Orphans First,

Welcome to the Arms of Love family!

Your recent gift to Arms of Love places you in a special group of people who are making a difference in the world by giving abandoned children a home, a family and a future – and making the world a better place for all. ArmsOfLoveWater1

When you give to Arms of Love, you help bring hope and lasting change to the world’s most vulnerable people – children.

Francis, who was locked in a closet and denied food for being disobedient is now learning how to love and trust again and is reading for the first time.

Juan, who was abandoned at a young age by a mother who was a prostitute and mentally ill, is in his third year at the University of Central America studying tourism.ArmsOfLoveGenerator

Keylin, who was living in a plastic “house” with no electricity or running water, came to live at Arms of Love after being abandoned by her mother. Although she had never been to school and suffered from malnutrition, she is now thriving, learning and growing.

As a member of the Arms of Love family, you will help make successes like these possible every day. Your generosity will touch countless lives. Bring smiles to the beautiful faces of children. Strengthen so many hearts.

You are an important part of this ministry. Thank you for caring and for putting that compassion into action!

For the children,
Geoff Cowles
(Program Coordinator)

Cabaret Baptist Children’s Home

Cabaret Baptist Children's HomeThe first fruits of Heart for Orphans First ministry are heading to Haiti!!  Through the generous donations of our supporters, we have been able to purchase a 50” flat screen television, BluRay DVD player, speakers, and mounting brackets for the Cabaret Baptist Children’s Home in Bercy, Haiti.  This will be first time the children in the orphanage have had the opportunity to have “entertainment” in this form.  In addition, we have collected more than 50 DVDs for the children to watch!

And if that isn’t awesome enough, how about a trunk full of other stuff like match box cars, dolls, play dishes, card games, Yahtzee, Checkers, Chess, coloring books, crayons, Play Dough , Nerf balls, soccer balls, jump ropes, Frisbees……and other fun little things.  We also are sent hair bows, flip flops, and 18 cans of potato chips (a favorite special snack)!  🙂
